March 15, 1943. Billy Lubinski (Anna’s Brother-in-Law) writes a short letter to Dad from Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin. “I’m up here at this field studying real hard to be a radio man – all kidding aside though, it really is a swell course – awfully hard – but it will really pay off later on. … in one day we cover just about as much as they do in a high school semester on one subject, so you can see how fast we move.”
He continues, “I’ve only been here a month and a half and already I’ve built quite a few transmitters and know all about what makes them run – the actual experience is easy enough to pick up – but it’s the doggone ‘Theory’ that makes it so complicated.”
He writes, “The chances of getting advancements while going to school are very slim – in fact impossible – but once I leave here I’ll probably go up pretty fast.” He mentions that he has been attached to the 48th Dive Bomber Squadron at Key Field in Mississippi. “I don’t know whether that’s to my advantage – or disadvantage.”

He finishes with, “I can only get one day off a week which only gives me 14 hours off – so all in all as far as getting together – well – things don’t look so good right now – but write and we’ll see if we can’t figure something out. “
